August Moon: Friendly, fresh and flavorful
December 15, 2008
The August Moon restaurant, in Pine Lake Village on the Sammamish Plateau, is within easy driving distance of Issaquah and well worth a visit. Its traditional Chinese fare is well-prepared and moderately priced, and it is certain to satisfy that craving for cashew chicken.
Or any of dozens of other dishes, for that matter. August Moon’s extensive menu covers it all — pork, poultry, seafood, vegetables, beef, noodles, tofu, rice and soup — with prices hovering around $10 and nothing over $15. Read more

Tucked deep into the northwest corner of the Meadows Shopping Center, unless you venture beyond the QFC grocery store, you’re likely to miss a hidden gem of a restaurant. Cascade Garden features the cuisines — Szechwan, Mandarin and Hunan —of northern China.
The first thing I noticed when seated were the most cushiony, comfortable booths I’ve ever sat in at a restaurant. Read more
Gaslamp: A sports bar and so much more

To me, Gaslamp Bar & Grill is really a hometown café, thinly disguised as a sports bar.
True, the decor — large TVs, pool tables, neon beer signs and hanging sports memorabilia — gives the impression that this is a place to hunker down with a basket of chicken wings and a brew while catching the game. And it is. But what self-respecting sports bar serves prime rib? And good prime rib at that? Read more

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of weekend lunches at my grandmother’s house. Our family would climb into my dad’s 1966 Plymouth Belvedere station wagon and we’d go over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house.
Well, actually, we’d hop on Interstate 90 and make the half-hour drive to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, from Spokane.
Grandma’s cooking was always homemade and hearty. The same can be said for the Boarding House restaurant, which reminds me of my grandmother’s house. Read more

More than 5,000 years old, Afghan culture has absorbed the best of many of the cultures it has come into contact with through the ages.
Alexander the Great, Genghis Kahn, the British Empire, the Soviet Union and, more recently, the Taliban regime, have left their mark on Afghanistan. Through it all, Afghanis held true to their roots and created culinary traditions of their own.
Almost all Afghanis have a cylindrical tandoor (clay) oven in their home and kebabs have been mentioned in Afghani literature for centuries. An excellent example of Afghani cuisine can be found at Bamiyan Restaurant. Read more

Whenever I travel, I always try to find the out-of-the-way, hole-in-the-wall restaurant not frequented by all the rest of the tourists. Usually, the locals enjoy authentically prepared meals that can’t be beat at the touristy spots.
Well, tucked in the recesses of Heritage Square shopping center, next to Sleep Country, lies an authentic taste of Mexico without having to travel south of the border. Read more
