South Cove family amazed by support after house fire

Jessica and Paul Smith take an inventory of the items donated to them after a fire destroyed their South Cove house in December, as their 1-year-old son Grayson looks on. The items are stored in the basement of Jessica’s parents’ home in Bellevue, where they’re staying. Contributed.
Jessica and Paul Smith have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from neighbors, co-workers and people in the community following a Dec. 21 fire that destroyed their South Cove home.
The acts of kindness and generosity have been boundless, the Smiths said. South Cove neighborhood children donated $700 that they raised shoveling snow. Friend, neighbors and total strangers have donated items including cash, gift cards, clothing, running shoes, blankets, bedding, blankets, toiletries and luggage. The items fill the basement of Jessica’s parents home in Bellevue, where the couple and their 1-year-old son Grayson have stayed since the blaze. Read more
Washington worst in nation for emergency health care

When it comes to Washington residents’ access to emergency health care, the state gets a flunking grade.
The American College of Emergency Physicians delivered this unflattering assessment in its recently released “National Report Card on the State of Emergency Medicine,” which looks at such criteria as access to care, quality of care, safety, medical liability, public health and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness.

Merry Christmas fund still open this week

Donations to Merry Christmas Issaquah had slowed during the snowy weather, but just before the year ended, an anonymous check for $15,000 arrived in the mail. It is the single largest donation the fund has received since its inception in 1981.

City has 33 board, commission positions that need to be filled

City officials are looking to fill several positions on its boards and commissions.
“Through its boards and commissions, the city relies on its citizens’ passions, talent and experience to help positively shape this community,” Autumn Monahan, the city’s communications director, wrote in an e-mail. “Becoming a member is a great way to get involved in your local government while working on something that interests you.”
City officials need 33 volunteers to fill the positions on 12 commissions and boards. Read more

Tree takes out network, power, car

A tree that fell in Issaquah Dec. 29 took out power and communications cables and crushed a car on Second Avenue Northwest.
The incident occurred just before 4 p.m., said Comcast spokesman Steve Kipp. But because power lines were knocked out, too, the Comcast repair crew had to wait for Puget Sound Energy to restore electricity before it could fix Comcast’s fiber optic line.
